Caregiver Tips

When your loved one has a challenging day, it might be frustrating. Some days, no matter what you do, it just isn't enough. On these days, remember you cannot possibly foresee every bump in the road, and every day, know that your efforts are priceless throughout his or her journey.

Here are some tips to keep in mind as you care for your loved one:

Day-to-day

  • Avoid strongly scented foods and candles. They can trigger nausea.
  • Distract your loved one from his or her symptoms by listening to favorite songs or watching favorite movies.
  • Stock up on mouthwash and toothpaste. Good dental hygiene is important to fight off bacteria and mucositis—not to mention the bad taste that can coincide with treatment.
  • Lay out loose-fitting clothes for your loved one to wear to help him or her feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible.
  • Be sure you are getting the right nutrition to keep up your own strength and energy!

Appetite-building

  • Make mealtimes fun by using colorful tableware, bright centerpieces and background music.
  • Try garnishing food to make it look more attractive.
  • Plan several smaller meals and snacks throughout the day. And though your loved one may feel like a burden, don't get discouraged. Your efforts will be appreciated.
  • Eat at the same times every day and do your best to stick to a schedule, even if your loved one does not feel particularly hungry.

For really tough days

  • Have straws and ice chips readily available. Small sips of water or sucking on ice will help calm your loved one's stomach after he or she has vomited.
  • Bland foods like toast and crackers are especially important on these days. They help replenish the food in your loved one's stomach without upsetting it.
  • Make nutritious ice cubes. Freeze RESOURCE® BREEZE into small pieces to have as a "snack."
  • Read to your loved one for a while. Having you there will help calm him or her, and the story will help take his or her mind off how he or she is feeling.
  • Take five minutes for yourself!
