Helping a friend or loved one through their battle with cancer can be a lot to handle. Not only does their treatment make huge drains on their body, but it can also demand a great deal from you. With our caregiver tools, we help you understand how to keep up your own strength while managing many of the eating problems your loved one may experience along the way.
You would do anything to help your loved one feel just a little bit better. A bouquet of flowers. Some words of hope. A special dinner. Ensuring the person you care for gets the nutrition he or she needs is doing exactly that.
One way to ensure your loved one is properly nourished is to keep food within easy reach. Try leaving a cup of applesauce or pudding on a bedside table for more troublesome days, or keep a bag of cut-up carrots on the top shelf of the refrigerator so they are easily accessible. You can also prepare meals in advance so they are ready when your loved one feels inclined to eat.
When helping your loved ones through their cancer journeys, remember that their lack of appetite and nutritional changes can be a challenge for you, too. At times, your loved one will not want to eat anything but one or two foods for a few days because of side effects, and sometimes they will not want to eat at all. On these days, gently encourage plenty of fluids. Click here for more information on hydration.
