Stay Strong

As a caregiver it is easy to lose sight of your own needs, but throughout this journey you, too, are living with cancer. Right now you're focused on helping your loved one recover, but your well-being is equally important. The United States Department of Health and Human Services reports that caregivers are twice as likely to suffer from depression as non-caregivers, making it especially imperative to stay vigilant of your own health and well-being during this already trying time. After all, to give the best care, you must also care for yourself.

Stay healthy
Caring for someone is grueling. Unless you make sure you are getting the nutrients and rest you need, you may become more susceptible to illness. Staying healthy yourself will benefit your loved one. If your immune system is strong, you are protecting your loved one from viruses that you may have passed along.

Find support
You have a unique role—one where your needs often come second, third...or last. Although you genuinely want to do everything you can to help your loved one recover, sharing your triumphs and challenges with someone who understands your situation is an integral part of staying strong throughout the cancer journey. Being able to talk about and get advice on your questions and concerns will help ease your mind so you can focus on what's important. Many organizations, like Gilda's Club, offer support for caregivers. All you have to do is go online to find them.

Know it's healthy to disagree
Sometimes you and your loved one will not see eye to eye. Be honest. It's okay to express your views, but be sure to choose the subjects you push back on wisely. Your opinions do matter, but it is important to be sensitive to your loved one right now. CarePages has helpful tips to keep in mind.

Accept that you can't do it all
You are likely spending a significant amount of time caring for your loved one while continuing to juggle everything else you do from day to day. Know that you cannot do it all on your own and ask for help when you feel overwhelmed. No one can do everything, and you are a better caregiver for recognizing when you need support.

Take time out for you
Do things that you love. By taking time out to relax and let go, you are refreshing and reenergizing. Don't let go of your hobbies and interests. They are an important way to rejuvenate and keep your strength and spirits up for what lies ahead.
