Nestlé Health Science - Alfamino® Infant - Infant Formula

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The only safe formula my son would eat So glad our pediatric gastroenterologist gave us a sample of this to try. Our son would scream and refuse 2 other formulas given to us in the hospital for up to 12 hours before giving in. Alfamino helped us sleep! Dairy and soy allergies are very serious! We knew if our physician recommended this, we could trust it would’ve safe to use. We supplemented breastmilk with this until he turned 12 months old with no more frightening hospitalizations.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not a cure all/Junk ingredients I switched to this formula because it was prescribed by our Pediatric Gastroenterologist. My son is 2 months old and has been on 6 different formulas! He has food intolerances and allergy (blood in stool). This formula has helped with the gas however, my LO now has reflux and only poops once every 3 days and even then we typically need to help him with rectal stimulation. We are sticking to this formula because it seems like there isnt any formula out there that will totally work for him. What I really dislike is the junk ingredients such as corn syrup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! My son has Biliary Atresia and he's been using this Alfamino and Duocal (calorie booster) since he was about 4 months old. He is 11 months old now. He tolerates this a million times better than Pregestimil. He's thriving. This is a great product!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Smells terrible We tried this for our baby who has a dairy and soy intolerance and he will not drink it. We use the Althera and that one he enjoys but we now think he may be lactose intolerant so will be unable to use the Althera. Elecare does not smell like the Alfamino. I read so many good reviews about this and really wanted it to work! It is very difficult to get this to dissolve but most amino acid formulas are in my experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great formula, hard to get This formula has been working really well for my baby. She has a very severe milk protein allergy and we tried multiple formulas before this one, she was miserable before and is a whole new baby now. My only frustration is the worry that comes with getting the formula as it is frequently out of stock and hard to find anywhere but on this site.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing formula for my baby This formula is a lifesaver! My baby has several food allergies and we have tried other hypoallergenic formulas (Neocate) which was inedible. Alfamino tastes so much better and it has not been a struggle to feed her on this formula. She’s growing so fast (98% percentile in height and has 10 teeth at 10 months old)!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Game Changer It took 5 long months to confirm that in addition to reflux, that we were dealing with a cow's milk protein allergy as well. Alfamino has really helped with the reflux. As others have noted, it is really difficult to mix and sometimes it leaves clumps but with Dr. Brown's #2s we don't have issues with clogging.

Key Benefits

Alfamino® Infant is a hypoallergenic amino acid-based formula for infants ages 0-12 months with cow's milk protein allergy, multiple food allergies or malabsorptive conditions. This nutritionally complete formula provides essential nutrients that infants need for growth and development and has a unique fat blend containing medium chain triglycerides (MCT) to facilitate fat absorption.

Alfamino® Infant is manufactured under Nestlé’s high quality standards. This easy-to-digest infant formula is lactose-free and gluten-free. Alfamino® hypoallergenic amino acid-based formulas with unique lipid blends are designed to:

  • Minimize the chance of further allergic reactions in a child with Cows' Milk Protein Allergy
  • Meets nutritional requirements while managing EoE with an elemental diet
  • Provides nutritional support to infants and children with SBS when an amino acid-based formula may be appropriate
  • Provides a formula with MCT that is efficiently absorbed to provide a more readily available energy source, especially during times of gastrointestinal compromise
  • Promotes adequate growth in healthy infants
  • Meets the AAP criteria for hypoallergenicity

USE UNDER MEDICAL SUPERVISION

WARNING: Your baby’s health depends on carefully following the preparation, use and storage instructions. Failure to follow these instructions could result in severe harm. Consult your baby’s doctor about the appropriate formula for your baby. Powdered infant formulas are not sterile and should not be fed to premature infants or infants who may have immune problems unless directed and supervised by your baby’s doctor.

Important notice: Mothers are encouraged to continue breastfeeding even when their infants have cows’ milk protein allergy, and can seek dietary counseling to help completely remove all sources of cows’ milk protein from their diets.

Why does my child need a specialty formula?
Healthcare professionals may recommend an amino-acid based formula such as Alfamino®, for the management of food allergies (including the most common one, cow’s milk protein allergy) or for other medical conditions. The formula contains free amino acids and not intact protein which helps minimize the chance of an allergic reaction.
Can Alfamino be used for ANY CMPA patient?
This product has been clinically shown to be hypoallergenic and is available for patients requiring a hypoallergenic amino acid-based formula. The suitability and use of a hypoallergenic formula should be determined by an experienced health care professional.
Why does Alfamino contain potato starch?
Potato starch is a minor contributing carbohydrate source in Alfamino and is used for its emulsification properties during manufacturing. The ingredients in Alfamino, including the potato starch, are carefully selected and screened.
What is the shelf life of Alfamino?
24 months from production. Look at the bottom of the can for the expiration date. However, once opened, the contents of the can should be used within 1 month.
Can Alfamino Infant be used with NICU patients?
Hypoallergenic, amino acid-based formulas are not designed for use in the NICU, and these formulas are generally not used routinely in such a setting. None of the currently available products have been formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of the medically compromised premature neonate, and therefore are not indicated for use in this patient population. However, the use of such a product in a premature infant is ultimately up to the healthcare provider.

Alfamino Infant is formulated to meet the macro- and micronutrient requirements to support optimal growth and nutrition of healthy, full-term infants. Premature neonates, including medically compromised premature neonates, have unique nutrient requirements separate from healthy full-term infants and should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional. The use of this product in a premature infant is not recommended. The suitability of any formula, including supplementation with modulars, should be addressed by a qualified healthcare professional familiar with the case history of the patient. As with any powdered formula product, use with immune-compromised infants & children is not recommended.
How is Alfamino different than the other amino acid-based formulas already on the market?
Both Alfamino formulas contain a unique lipid blend that is designed to support tolerance: Alfamino Infant formula contains 43% of fat as MCT (10% more than competitors), and Alfamino Junior contains 65% of fat as MCT (>30% more than competitors). Because Alfamino formulas are indicated for both food protein allergies and malabsorption, the MCT content can provide a nutritional advantage for children with fat malabsorption (like short bowel syndrome).* If a customer prefers to carry only one amino acid-based formula on formulary, Alfamino may have an advantage due to the higher MCT for patients with malabsorption. Alfamino is truly a dual use product: i.e. it contains a hypoallergenic amino acid-based nitrogen source, and a high MCT content to support tolerance in children with fat-malabsorptive conditions.

*MCTs do not require traditional fat metabolism and, are therefore more easily absorbed directly into the enterocyte and are transported through the portal vein to the liver. As a result, MCTs are absorbed more rapidly than long chain triglycerides (Bach et al, 1982). Also, MCT oils are valuable in a number of clinical situations because they are digested quickly and less likely to be affected by intestinal factors that inhibit fat absorption (Krause, 2012).
